Session 5: Promethean Graffiti Wall & Media Slam

  1. On week 5, we created this board based on the main events that happened recently as well as on that week. Most words were based on the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy, henceforth the reason most are meant to be encouraging and supporting. Also some are based on Malala and her recovery.

    1. Yea this week was tough. Since we were limited to two words we had to pick some that were strong and meaningful. The theme of this was super sad but I think we did an awesome job of taking something so tragic and showing our support towards it in the simplest way possible.

  2. On our Week 5 graffiti board, I wrote "Life=Unfair". The fact that lives of young people can be taken away with one pull of a trigger inspired me to write those two powerful words. An example of how fragile and unfair life is is the Newtown shooting. Nobody that died deserved it yet their lives ended so quickly. Everyday on the news or online we see people die . Sometimes we just need to enjoy what we have while we have it because it can be taken away so easily. So yea, life really is unfair.

I do agree with you life is unfair. Like the examples you stated those little kids in Sandy Hook did not deserve to die they deserved to live, grow up and be successful. But in this world life isn't fair. Also, like you said a life can be taken away with a pull of a trigger. It's that simple but the life that is taken away isn't. Thousands people die from shootings. But all of them who died because of the conflict did not deserve to die. But as you said life isn't fair.

  3. I chose the comment "Heart Broken". The reason for this is because I wanted to express the feelings of the people that were hurt from tragedy that occured in Sandy Hook.I wish the best for the community of Newtown, Connecticut.

  4. I wasn't here this day but I have a few questions: What was the theme of this week? Why did you guys write short phrases?

    1. Ivana,

You pose great questions! There were two themes this week: Malala's release from the hospital and Sandy Hook, specifically the quilt swatch Room 504 created for Gray's quilt. I challenged everyone to limit their graffiti to two words, or a very short phrase at the most. There is a specific reason behind this challenge, which you all will know about very soon. . .

    1. Alejandro,

I find it very inspiring that you are reading between the lines to see hope in the graffiti. Is there specific writing on the wall that led you there?
The wall did not need to resemble anything specific, however the themes for that week were Malala's discharge from the hospital and Sandy Hook, particularly the quilt swatch Room 504 made for Gray's quilt.

      Great questions!

  6. I wrote 'I'm tired.' on the graffiti board. I wrote I'm tired because I was tired that morning and I was also tired of hearing all of the troubles going on in the world. I like how the board is black and white. The quote 'Girl Power' goes well with the board because Malala is on the board and she has given girls rights to education.

    1. Hi Glenda,

I can relate to growing tired of hearing about all the troubles in the world ~ talking about the negative stuff can be exhausting!

The remaining class sessions we have together will focus on solutions and action to these troubles, rather than analyzing why they exist. You will each have the opportunity to come up with artistic ways to express these solutions, which should hopefully provide a sense of invigoration and empowerment.

Speaking of Girl Power, I think you would enjoy checking out www.smartgirlsattheparty.com, a website started by comedian/actress Amy Poehler. Girl Power is alive and kicking there and it will make you smile for sure. I would love to see Amy interview Malala one day. :-)

    3. I agree with you Glenda on the colors that they chose for the boards. I think it looks cool how the colors show the emotion of the words. And I just think black and white looks nice.

  7. I wrote "We care <3" for week 5. I wrote this because I do care about everything that happens on CNN News and about Sandy Hook. I feel bad and want to show my compassion for all the families who have lost someone. All those children and adults do not deserve to die. Everyone deserves a life. A question I have is, why do people have the desire to kill others? A question I have for Malala is how can she be so strong and courages to stand up for other people? I wouldn't be able to do that ever. Malala has all of my respect.

    1. I wish I had an answer. Unfortunately, bad things do happen. That is why it is so important to appreciate all the good in life and to always be thankful for what we have.

  8. I would have written keep trying
Because Malala never gave up and even
Though she was shot she survived and keeps fighting
for her rights and other girls rights for them to go to school

    1. I agree. Malala's really a role model in the way that she stands up for her beliefs.

    2. I agree, because Malala was ready to die for the rights she deserved

  9. I wrote, "Comfort".
In wrote this in spite of the Sandy Hook tragedy. Everyone in Newtown is scared. Even though they do not show it, the fear and pain still lives inside of them forever will. What they need is comfort. Comfort so they have not one thing to fear or be scared of. That is my reasoning of writing "Comfort" on this graffiti board.

    1. I completely agree! You chose a perfect sentiment for what this community needs the most...comfort.

  10. I wasn't here when the class did this but I can see that it shows quotes that are about two or three words. I see that there is a picture of Malala and the quilt patch that was for Sandy Hook. I assume that these are the quotes that we thought of when we see Malala and Sandy Hook. Some questions I would like to ask are: what does the I'm tired and for us mean?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I wrote "anything is possible" because even though Malala was in the hospital she still contuined to fight for girls rights to education and she contuined to inspire all different types of people.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree with you when you say that anything is possible because Malala is proving that by what shes doing now.

    2. I agree with you best fiend. C: I think Malala did a great job at supporting girls rights and more people should get the courage to do that.

    3. Yes Yaziria you are completely right. "Anything is possible", as long as you keep your mind to as Malala did she fought for what she wanted.

  12. "Believe" is what I wrote on the promethean board. I wrote this because the families of the 20 children and 6 adults who died at the Sandy Hook Elementary, should believe that their loved ones, went up to heaven, and now in a better place. For the Malala case, the girls in Pakistan , should believe that they shouldnt let anything get in the way of their education. If Malala stood up for herself and her rights, then all the other girls can do it. If they all are determined to have their education, then maybe, they can do it.

  14. On week 5 I posted the quote "dream". What inspired me to write this was Malala because she is following her dream and even though she got shot she keeps on trying to follow her dream. Malala inspired me and maybe one day her dream will come true.

    1. I like what you wrote on the board, Vanessa. It shows simplicity, and a big idea in such a small word. I hope that Malala's dream comes true as well.

  15. On this Graffiti wall I wrote "R.I.P" because I thought about the tragedy that happened at Sandy Hook elementary. I wrote R.I.P for all the victims that were killed on that horrible day. I wrote that because i thought the tragedy that occurred was sad and terrible so I wrote R.I.P for all the victims. I wanted to show that the victims did not deserve this

  17. On the week 5 week 5 our classroom made a graffiti wall. What I wrote in the graffiti wall was " Life Live On". The reason I wrote these 3 words was despite Malala's and Sandy Hooks problems they still had courage to move on. Malala she got injured by gun shots went to the hospital and endured all the physical and emotional pain but she still moved on. She didn't look back to the problems she went life live on. Also, Sandy Hook the parents, friends and family that lost a loved one had emotional stages were they just couldn't take it but despite thier problems they moved on stronger than ever. These are the reasons why I wrote "Life alive On". My question is hoe do they get the faith and encouragement to move on? - Raymond B.

  18. On this graffiti wall I choose to write "life" because It is symbolic to everything we talked about, like malala and how she had a difficult life trying to fight for woman's rights in Pakistan. And how hard the family members of the victims in the sandy hook shootings life will be.
One question I have is why do women have no rights in Pakistan?

    ReplyDelete

    1. It is really sad that people have to go through all this and have difficult lives while the people who hurt them are sleeping easily.

  19. On this graffiti I would have written "Don't give up". What Inspired me to think of these words was Malala's recovery. She never gave up on life after what happened to her. She inspired many people to believe that what she was doing for women rights is possible. She didn't give up on anything and didn't let all those people that look up to her down.

    1. I agree with you because It is very inspirational how people have to go through all this and still have the capability to push forward

  20. I wrote "all in" because I think people are going "all in" to help the cause, whatever the cause may be. We also talked about Malala and how she was released from the hospital because she was shot by the Taliban.

  21. On Week 5 of our Promethean Graffiti & Media Slam, we made comments on recent events, specifically Malalah and Sandy Hook. I wrote "Never Forget" for Sandy Hook because the school shootings were one of the deadliest mass murder at an American school (second-deadliest according to Wikipedia, first being the 1927 Bath School Bombings) and this kind of horror cannot be forgotten, especially since the victims were 6-7 year olds that never got a chance at life.

  22. I wrote "hope" because through all the struggles and devastation we go through we must keep "hope" and stay strong, as the kids did when they returned to school and Malala when she stayed strong and finished her speech. One question in my mind is why shoot kids as in both cases

    1. True.Malala stood up for what she believed in. And adults and teachers stood up and sacrificed there lifes for children. Both of them are tragic though.

  23. I wrote "change needed". The reason being is because what is happening in today's world, change really is needed. A poor 15 year old girl named Malala Yousafzia was injured a couple of weeks ago for standing up for what she thought was right. Also, the sandy hook elementary shooting. It really is devastating to see that little kids that still had their whole life ahead of them were killed. And even worse, for no apparent reason. Change is needed, and quickly before anything worse happens..

  24. I didn't put anything on this post but if i did i would have put peace because it saddens me that so many innocent people are getting hurt for no reason like Malala when she was shot because she wanted equal education for all people but then someone decided that they didn't agree so they thought that my views are right and hers are wrong so I guess I'll put an end to her ideas. I just don't know why we cant live I peace, is it really that hard?

    1. I don't think that everyone can be on the same page as you because everyone has different thoughts and opinions but I think that you are correct in thinking that keeping peace is the best for everyone.

    2. We cant really live in peace because we all we have ever known is war.

    3. I think I would have put the same thing because that is what this world needs: Peace.

  25. It is very good that she did follow her dream. If she didn't, then there would be people that would never do what they know is right. I'm positive that she inspired a lot of people.

  26. I wrote Girl Power because Malala is a great example if it with the way she displays her bravery and stands up for what she belives in.My question is why are peoples role models the ones dieing and being injured?

    1. What if Malala was a boy? Would you have chose to write "boy power"?

  27. For this graffiti wall, I wrote "Live Lifetothefullest". The reason that life to the fullest is one word, is because our goal was to write a comment in two words. I wrote this because I want to tell people not to give up. A good example is Malala not giving up when she wanted to change girls education. One question about the wall is, why was it so hard to put the comment in two words? Overall, I think the wall is a cool project.

  28. In week 5 i wrote "For Us" because i wanted it to represent Malala. Malala wanted woman to have the right to be educated just as men had that right. she stood up for what she felt was needed and important to everyone. she had to be really brave to stand up for people and what she belived in knowing there could be consequenes. She got badly wounded for doing this but shes stopping untill she has acomplished her goal. everything shes doing is not only for her but for all the woman who dont have a voice in this.
